About the Author
Colleen was born in Kingston, Jamaica in the Caribbean, the third of three daughters of Norma and Arthur Wint.
In her youth, Colleen wrote stories, poems and songs, and although she was never what one would call “an avid reader,” she loved hearing and telling stories. She admits her storytelling skills intensified when she created bedtime stories for her own children. They would always end with a firm declaration “And THAT’s the end of the story!” (i.e., it was time to go to sleep!)
Before writing Celebrating Me, Colleen was proudest of her coordination of the children’s book Diego Dish and Carlotta Spoon, which developed out of The Storytelling for Early Childhood & Parenting Support (STEPS), a parent story-telling project of the Caribbean Child Support Initiative. The book was translated into Spanish and four indigenous Caribbean languages and included an audio version.
Celebrating Me is Colleen’s first short story developed for publication, although she has written articles, features and training publications on development issues for a variety of national, regional and international agencies.
Her early years and schooling alternated between the UK and Jamaica. She later attended both St. Andrew High School for Girls in Kingston, Jamaica, and South Hampstead High School for Girls in London, England. She earned her B.Sc. in Social Administration at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, Jamaica, and went on to The New School in New York, USA, where she attained her M.A. in Media Studies. She has continued her professional development at institutions such as the UWI, New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, Ixchel Spanish School (Guatemala), The Latin American Reference Center for Preschool Education (Cuba) and Thunderbird School of Global Management (USA).
Experienced in the private and public sectors, and as a consultant, she finds development work most rewarding. Her membership with Parenting Partners Caribbean Ltd., especially their development of the manual "Pathways to Parenting: A Caribbean Approach" and also working with with 3D Projects (Dedicated to the Development of Persons with Disabilities) focused her attention on family issues.
The seed for Celebrating Me grew as she facilitated parenting and community workshops, and with the needs expressed by friends and relatives.
